Police have just made an arrest in a gruesome stabbing that left one brother dead and another in critical condition.
Police say both brothers were stabbed and had their throats slashed during a robbery Tuesday morning and detectives just caught up with the suspected robber within the last couple of hours.
According to police, 48-year-old Gregory Shelton was taken into custody after a short pursuit in Webster and he was then brought to the Angleton Police Department.
Our camera was rolling as a car pulled up to the Angleton PD. Inside was the man police say stabbed two brothers -- Edward and Robert Rivera. Edward died at the scene.
"Eddie would give you the shirt off of his back. He would give you anything you needed. He took me and my brother and my sister in when were little and raised us as his own," said the victim's niece, Mary Rivera.
It happened Tuesday morning at a house on Plum. Angleton police say the brothers were innocent victims and believe robbery was the motive behind the gruesome attack.
"Multiple stab wounds. The deceased had approximately stab wounds as well as a cut throat," said Sgt. Kirk Coleman with the Angleton Police Department.
Police say despite his injuries, the surviving victim was able to identify Shelton as the killer, leading to his arrest Wednesday afternoon. The crime has left neighbors in shock.
"It's horrible. No matter what happened. It's horrible and gruesome and no one deserves to die like that," said neighbor Lynn McBeth.
As family members now keep vigil at the hospital hoping Robert Rivera pulls through, they are also struggling to comprehend their loss.
"That's what we don't understand. Why? Why them?" said family member Juan Villareal.
Edward Rivera was 53 years old.
"He was the backbone. He was the one taking care of the family. If someone got sick, he was there," said Villareal.
Police say Robert Rivera is expected to survive his injuries.
One of the brothers knew the suspected slasher in this case but didn't say how. Investigators believe money was taken from the home.
