1 killed after 2 crashes in 30 minutes on Sam Houston Tollway

HOUSTON – One person was killed Sunday after two crashes within 30 minutes on the Sam Houston Tollway.

According to the Harris County Precinct 7 Constable's Office, around 6:30 a.m. Sunday, a Nissan Xterra was involved in a minor accident on the Beltway southbound near West Bellfort.

A man in a flatbed pickup truck stopped to help clear traffic away from the scene.

"There was a Good Samaritan that had stopped for a prior accident and was trying to slow traffic down away from the prior accident when his vehicle was struck," said Captain Terry Thurman with the Precinct 5 Constable's Office.

Moments later, a Toyota Corolla rear-ended his truck and came to rest in the right lane.

"The little, small pickup truck was in the inside lane, and the two cars collided with each other," said Thurman.

The man driving the Corolla was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was seriously injured.

The southbound toll way was blocked for several hours as officials finished their investigation.
