1 killed, 4 hurt when car smashes into family party
Deputies search for driver
A family Halloween party turned tragic after investigators said a man driving a white Chevy Camaro ran a stop sign and smashed into the back yard of a home.
The accident happened early Sunday morning on Old Greenhouse at Gummert.
"There was a Halloween party going on in the backyard of the residence, the vehicle struck four people," said Sgt. Susan Cotter of the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
Cotter said the driver of the Camaro ran a stop sign where the road forms a "T" and had enough speed to make it past a steep ditch, through a wooden fence and into the crowd.
"The driver of the Camaro fled the scene after the crash.. We're still attempting to locate that driver," said Cotter.
Ana Sylvia Borjas, 38, was killed during the crash. Four other people, including a 4-year-old girl, were also hurt but their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
"There are signs that alcohol was a factor in the crash. The vehicle smells like alcohol," said Cotter.
Cotter said investigators were able to track down the son of the car's owner, who told detectives he lent the car to a friend. Detectives said the description of that "friend" matches a description of the driver given to deputies by family members.
The driver of the car is described as a white man between 18 and 24 years old, with light-colored, short, spiked hair. The man is also described as standing between 5 feet 9 inches and 6 feet tall with a slim to medium build. He was last seen wearing a red Polo shirt with blue jeans.
