1 dead in armored truck robbery outside AMC movie theater

Police says suspect in getaway car still at large

HOUSTON – Police say one person is dead and another was injured after a violent shootout during an armored truck robbery outside a southwest Houston movie theater.

Investigators said around 3:20 p.m. Saturday, an armored truck with two guards pulled up to the AMC movie theater at the intersection of Dunvale Road and Meadowcroft Drive to collect a bag of money.

When one of the guards was coming back from the theater with money, investigators said she was ambushed and shot in the hip.

Police said the second guard then started shooting from the driver's seat of the truck, but later got out and kept firing.

The suspect was shot in the chest, police said. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

A second suspect, waiting in a getaway car, took off and is still at large, police said.

Christian Cato and fellow movie goers watched in shock as gunfire erupted outside the theater.

"Wow, is this really happening? Should I run? Should I panic?" asked Cato.

Cato was walking to the theater bathroom when he heard the shots and ran to the front doors.

"I just saw shooting, like two guy shooting, shooting at each other," said Cato.

Larry Smith was also at the theater to see a movie. He said he tried to help other ticket holders who were still outside the theater during the shooting.

"The people outside were ducking behind the plants, trying to get out of the way," said Smith. "I let them in the side door, and they all ran inside. Everybody ran and hid."

The guard who was shot is expected to be okay.

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
