An SUV went crashing through three townhomes in Alief Friday morning. A huge mess was left, but amazingly no one was hurt.
Investigators said the driver was traveling north on Cook Road when his SUV jumped the median and crashed into the first town home around 5 a.m. Friday.
"We woke up because I heard a loud boom, and I heard glass shattering," said Maria Kittrell, an expecting mother who was sleeping in her room when an SUV plowed through the side of her house. "I just saw the wall collapse and half a car in my living room. It’s crazy, just scary."
The driver’s Ford Expedition went through three units before coming to a stop.
"He was apparently carrying too much speed to negotiate the turn, left the roadway went into one side of a duplex, went through that unit, left that unit, and struck a third," said Houston police Sgt. E. W. Blankenship.
Inside the first townhome, a family of four was asleep. They said the crash sounded like an explosion.
The SUV finally came to a stop in a third townhome.
A witness to the crash said the driver took off running down the street, but police later found him inside his apartment about a block away. The driver was taken into custody on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
"It is unique and it is a blessing that nobody was hurt or killed," said Blankenship.
Police are looking into whether alcohol played a factor in the crash. The driver could face multiple charges including felony criminal mischief.
