Chocolate, Tea, Wine May Help Brain

Chocolate, Tea, Wine May Help Brain

POSTED: Tuesday, December 30, 2008

Chocolate, tea and wine help your brain work better, according to researchers from Oxford University.

2009: New Year, New You

More than 2,000 people between ages 70 and 74 answered a survey about what they usually eat and took tests. Those who eat chocolate or drink tea or wine had significantly better scores and lower rates of poor thinking.

Wine produced the strongest results, the researchers said.

The researchers said that those foods are major dietary sources of polyphenols, micronutrients found in plant-derived foods, some of which are known as flavonoids.

The team said, however, that more research is needed to show if flavonoids caused the improved performance or if some other factor was involved.

The findings were reported in the Journal of Nutrition.
