Warriors Sign Free Agent Calbert Cheaney

POSTED: 5:23 PM EDT August 27, 2003

Calbert Cheaney signed a free-agent contract with Golden State on Wednesday. Terms of the deal were not released.

Cheaney, a 6-7 swingman, played 81 games, starting 74, for Utah last season. The 32-year-old averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 29.0 minutes.

"We feel fortunate to add another player who was a starter for a playoff team last season," said Warriors general manager Garry St. Jean. "Calbert adds more depth to our squad and is another player who can play two positions, shooting guard and small forward."

The Warriors have now added four veterans during the off-season, as Speedy Claxton, Nick Van Exel and Clifford Robinson should improve their depth and flexibility.

In 10 seasons with Washington, Boston, Denver and the Jazz, Cheaney has averaged 10.6 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 649 career games.

The Washington Bullets selected Cheaney with the sixth overall pick of the 1993 NBA Draft. He averaged double-figure points in each of his first five seasons, including a career-high 16.6 mark in 1994-95.
