HOUSTON -- You don't have to have a computer to cash in on the online auction craze, Local 2 reported Tuesday. A Houston-area company is willing to do all the work for you.
The online auction site, eBay, has become a national phenomenon. You can find just about anything for sale. Now, anyone can sell his or her items, even without the Internet.
Tod Knight and his brother own EZ Auction Stop, 8715 Katy Freeway, Houston's first eBay drop-off storefront. Customers can bring in items worth at least $50 and Knight will take it from his countertop to the Internet.
"We pay the listing fees. We put it online. We take the pictures. We do all the effort, follow up and collect payment, pack it and ship it and they get a check less our commission and the eBay fee," Knight said.
Robert Bugos is a computer-savvy sales professional. But when it comes to selling his household items, he does not want the hassle.
"These guys are great. They take really great pictures of it first, which I think really helps sell the items. They do research and they do a lot of comparison-type shopping," he said.
Customers keep 60 to 75 percent of the sale, depending on the price.
Bugos said it's worth it.
"I think the money that I get from them, including the commission, is probably more than I would get if I sat down and did it on my own, less the time, too," he said.
But, not everyone is happy about the new trend.
Newspapers in some cities, like Portland, Ore., are denying ad space to the stores because of concerns that they will compete with the classifieds.
Potential sellers can find ads for "eBay Drop-Off Stores" in local papers.
