Sleeping in a cozy bed can make you happier

My Cozy Bed

It's a Saturday morning, and your body naturally rises out of its slumber. Then you realize that it's Saturday, it's the weekend, and you feel just how warm and cozy you are all snuggled up in your comfortable bed, knowing that if you want to you can lay there for another hour … or three. That, my friends, isn't just Saturday appreciation -- it's also "bed appreciation." I'm convinced that if I had a crappy bed, I would not have these same feelings. My mom taught me early on the importance of a good bed. She has been a yogi for a long time, and has often shared the yogic quote with me, "You're as young as your spine is flexible." Nothing supports that like a good bed. And if you're striving for good sleep, your bed had better be a good one to sleep in. Now, I don't think I need to list for you the numerous health benefits of sleep; I just know that a good night's rest is what gets my day going in a positive direction.

Breville Juicer

I discovered juicing when I was a kid and could get fresh squeezed orange juice from the street vendors in South America. I remember drinking sugar cane juice that was freshly juiced right in front of me. I drank coconut water straight from the coconut. I cannot explain how good that stuff tasted. These days, I do a lot of juicing of greens with my nothing-less-than-awesome Breville juicer. This thing leaves no morsel of juice in the fruit or vegetable it is juicing. And I can't even explain that *zing* I feel when I take my first sip of some freshly juiced green concoction. I just know that it's pure goodness going down.

The Vacuum, Kind Of

I'm mentioning the vacuum purely for the "healthy" aspect of this blog! I have a love/hate relationship with the vacuum and everything surrounding it. You know that saying that usually signifies a co-dependent relationship, "can't live with her/him, can't live without him/her"? This is exactly how I feel about that old thing, the vacuum. I love what it does for my home in that it picks up all the dust and dirt off of the floors … but I can't stand how it sounds and I can't stand the chore of vacuuming. I suppose I have an extra special dislike for vacuuming because I am allergic to dust. Just the act of vacuuming reminds me of its purpose, and that alone gives me the heebie-jeebies. Awkward as the approach may be, consider this nonetheless an invitation to come over to vacuum anytime you're bored! I'll feed you in return.

Carson, My Tea Kettle

So if the bit about the vacuum wasn't weird enough, I've got to admit something else. On the other end of the spectrum, I have serious love for my electric tea kettle. I love it so much, that I've named him. His name is Carson -- because I think that would be a good name for a butler (no offense to any Carsons out there!). I consider Carson a butler, because I tell him to give me some hot water, press a button, and I've got hot water in a matter of less than a minute. Anyone who knows me knows that my morning cup of hot tea is very important to me, so Carson gets big-time love because he makes that tea necessity a reality for me, day in and day out.

Hamilton Beach Blender

This is a great little blender that's just big enough to make me one smoothie, so nothing goes to waste. The best part about it is that I can detach the top part that contains the smoothie, and it serves as a portable mug to drink out of. It's even got a little sippy cut out to drink from. It fits perfectly in the cup holder in my car, too. It's great if I want a quick green smoothie or fruit smoothie on-the-go.

Open Windows

After a good cleaning, I love opening the windows of my house to let the fresh air flow through. It helps to eliminate the odor of all the cleaning stuff, and it just makes the house feel even cleaner to me. I especially love doing this if the day is a nice one: not too hot, not too cold. The fresh air coming through the house makes me feel as though I'm a bit closer to nature, even though I'm inside. There's nothing like fresh clean air.

Television …

I know, I know. You wouldn't think that television would be on a list of things that makes someone feel healthy and happy … so let me break it down for you. I wake up at 5:00 in the morning to work with my first client, and on most days it's pretty much non-stop until 8:30 in the evening, when my son is in bed. Sometimes I have some writing to do after that, or a last client call. But on nights that I have no further obligations, I pour myself a glass of Malbec after a hot shower, and watch one of my favorite shows that I've recorded. Just being able to do something mindless like watching TV while sipping on a glass of red is very relaxing and makes me happy. And happiness is a big part of the formula for being healthy, so there you have it!

Fireplace in Winter

I attribute much of my ability to survive on the East Coast to my fireplace. I honestly do not know what I would do without one during the cold winter months. There's nothing like having it snowing outside (those of you that bore witness to "Snowmageddon" on the East Coast last February know what I'm talking about) and being warm and toasty inside in front of a cozy fire with a hot cup of hot chocolate in hand. It's bliss. Nothing short of it. Now that Winter is just around the bend, I'm making sure that the fireplace is ready for the months ahead.
