If an illness or surgery requires you to receive more blood, or components of blood, a blood transfusion may be needed.

A blood transfusion is when donated blood (either from a donor or in some cases blood you’ve donated ahead of time) is added to your blood.

The blood is inserted into your veins through an intravenous line that’s placed in your arm. In non-emergency cases a blood transfusion can take a couple of hours.

Before the blood is added to your blood, your blood type is verified to make sure you are receiving compatible blood.
