History of U.S. flag
Do you know the history of the American flag?
The American flag represents the strength and unity of the United States. Over the past 200 years it has undergone numerous changes.
The first American flag was sewn by Betsy Ross in 1776. It had seven red and six white stripes. There were 13 white stars on a blue background in the top left corner representing the original colonies of the United States.
Today, the flag still has 13 stripes representing the original 13 colonies but there are 50 stars on a blue background representing every state that has joined the union.
According to the U.S. Code, Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 8(j) the U.S. flag “represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing.” In some countries common citizens do not have the right to fly their country’s flag. The U.S. flag represents the freedom and unity of the nation wherever it is flown.
