Police: Teen Lied About Sexual Assault

Harris County Sheriff's detectives say a lie prompted last month's stabbing of a teenage boy at Wunsche High School in the Spring Independent School District.

Local 2 investigative reporter Arnold has been tracking the investigation and explains that while a lie has been exposed, the criminal case is far from over.

On April 28, the father of a Wunsche High School student went to campus with his daughter, believing she had been raped the weekend before at a house party.

While the family was waiting in the lobby to speak with the principal, another student, Joshua Chapa, walked into the building. Police said the girl claimed Chapa was at the party where she was sexually assaulted.

Investigators said the girl's father then stabbed Chapa three times before being wrestled to the ground by a Spring ISD police officer.

"I feel sorry for everyone in this case because I think it was just a scared kid who didn't know how to get out of trouble, tried to lie her way out of trouble and then it got beyond that," said Lt. Ruben Diaz, with the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

Diaz said detectives were skeptical of the girl's story from the get-go. Diaz said the teen finally admitted she made up the story about rape as a way to get out of trouble for going to that party in the first place.

"I think her lie, just like a lot of kids that do lie, one led to another one, to another one and she couldn't climb her way out of it," said Diaz. "She didn't know how to back out."

As for why the girl came forward now and admitted that she was lying, detectives said it was nothing more than time and a guilty conscience. Officials said the girl would not face any punishment for lying.

"She didn't expect her dad to completely act like he did," said Diaz.

The girl's father, Ruben Cuellar-Romo, will have to deal with the consequences. He's been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Joshua Chapa is expected to fully recover from his wounds.

Aside from that, the boy's attorney said he has evidence that Chapa was never even at the party. Detectives believe the teen pointed Chapa out to her father for no other reason then he happened to be walking by at the time the family was waiting in the school's lobby.
