Irika Sargent joined KPRC Local 2 as an anchor and reporter in August 2011.
Irika, a native of Kansas City, Mo., graduated from the University of Missouri School of Journalism with a bachelors degree in broadcast journalism.
During and after college, she worked as a reporter and anchor for KOMU TV, the NBC affiliate in Columbia, Mo. Irika also worked in NBC's London bureau.
Irika then decided she wanted legal experience to contribute to the stories she covered as a journalist. So, she attended Cornell Law School, graduating with a Juris Doctor degree.
Irika spent the next four years practicing law in New York City at the international law firm of Greenberg Traurig LLP.
"I represented clients in New York federal and state courts, as well as the New York Division of Human Rights and National Labor Relations Board. But I never planned to stay away from journalism too long!" she said.
While still working for the law firm, Irika returned to KOMU to contribute a series of legal stories on issues affecting Mid-Missourians.
She returned to journalism full-time as a reporter, legal show host, and fill-in anchor at WPMI, the NBC station in Mobile, Alabama.
Irika loves working out in her spare time.
"I love martial arts and hold a black belt in Tae Kwon Do," she said. "I am so excited to make Houston home. I enjoy spending time with family and friends, traveling, and heading to local parks with my dog, Kingsley."
