Memorial Day weekend in southeast Texas. College graduations are over. Secondary schools are winding down. The official start of summer is less than a month away. But, for all intents and purposes, we can say that summer is already here!
Houston's average high temperature over the Memorial Day weekend is 89 degrees. The average low is 70. And, while nothing is a true guarantee when it comes to weather, we can safely say that our chance for cold fronts to push fresh, cooler air into Houston are near zero.
Climatologically, this Memorial Day weekend will be very close to normal -- highs near 90 and lows in the low to mid 70s. And, we expect these numbers to hold or continue to creep up as we head through the first week of June. It's exactly the type of weather we expect in late May. . . with one notable exception.
The exception is rainfall. Typically, in late May and early June we average between 0.15 and 0.20 inch of rain daily in the Houston area. That's not to say that we should get that much rain every day, but when average out rainfall over a longer period, it would work out to just shy of 0.2 inch. This year, we expect very little, if any, rainfall between Memorial Day weekend and the first part of June.
So far this year, Bush Intercontinental Airport has received just over 9 inches of rain. Normal rainfall through this date would be 17 inches. So, we're only slightly above 50% in the rain bucket for the year so far. That's not good. And, if we continue to see a lack of rain, we can look forward to two things: more extreme drought and unusually hot temperatures!
We'll see how the summer plays out. Will it be Super-exceptionally blazing hot like 2011, or will it just be blazing hot like most other years? Will it be profoundly dry or normal? Time will tell. But in the meantime, if you're a warm weather lover you can rejoice! Don't expect any more cool-downs before the scorching, hot, humid summer stretch comes to an end next Autumn. Summer is HERE!
