Preparations are under way for thousands of Thanksgiving meals that will provide a free turkey dinner to Houstonians in need, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday.

The 24th annual Waste Management Superfeast and the City Wide Club Thanksgiving Feast will be held at different downtown Houston locations on Thursday.

The Superfeast takes place in front of Houston City Hall, 900 Smith at Walker. The City Wide Club Feast takes place at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

Monday morning, more than 8,000 pounds of turkey was sliced at the Wal-Mart Super Center on Tomball Parkway for the Superfeast.

The Superfeast dinner will be served between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., and the time will be extended if needed.

There will be plenty of food on hand and guests are invited to go through the line as many times as they would like.

Officials said the Superfeast will serve 8,500 pounds of turkey, 4,000 pounds of dressing, 400 gallons of gravy, 4,000 pounds of whole cranberries, 4,000 pounds of green beans, 4,000 pounds of corn, more than 24,000 servings of cakes and pies from Wal-Mart and Camelot Desserts, 30,000 slices of Wal-Mart white and wheat bread, and 22,000 servings of Coca-Cola.

All excess food will be donated to the End Hunger Network and the Houston Food Bank.

Between 17,000 and 22,000 people are expected to attend the Superfeast.

Volunteers do not need to sign up in advance. They can show up on Thanksgiving Day and sign in at the volunteer tent on 400 Walker at Bagby. Families with children of all ages are welcome to volunteer. Children will be able to work alongside their parents.
