2 medical procedures could stop sweating for good

This time of year, whether you're exerting energy or not, it won't take long to break a sweat.

For some people, it's so bothersome they're desperate for a way to stop it. You can spend money on medical-grade deodorants, but doctors say there is something more permanent.

Simply existing in Houston during August is enough to make you sweat.

"In Houston you have Christmas and summer, your basic two seasons," Dr. Joseph Perlman said.

He gives patients, who are desperate to control underarm sweating, two options, "Botox works, yes it works," Perlman said.

A needle to the armpit and a hit to the wallet, but he said Botox is a guaranteed end to sweat. With a treatment needed every 3 to 4 months, he said patients pay $1,000 each time.

For the same price, he offers Miradry technology. He said it is a permanent fix in the majority of patients after the first treatment.

"I love the results. It's amazing," patient Anna Elliston said.

She had Miradry done a couple months ago.

"I'm not a bodybuilder or anything like that, but I like gardening so in this type of weather, especially in this month, it's very very hot outside," Elliston said.

She said insurance did not cover this procedure and for anyone who would need a second treatment, it's another $1,000 out of pocket. Perlman said there are several benefits to Miradry.

"In women, it partially destroys the auxiliary hair. Anywhere between 40 and 60 percent," she said.

That means getting rid of sweat and possibly eliminating shaving too.

There is a medical condition called hyperhydrosis. It's when sweat drips from hands, feet and face. Most patients will insist it never stops, no matter the suggested remedy. Patients with this condition can ask doctors about a surgical procedure that cuts the nerve which triggers sweating to those areas of your body.
