How often should you wash your sheets?

Jeans, towels and sheets should be washed more often than you may think

The majority of people don't wash sheets, towels and jeans after every use, but bacteria thrive in these warm, dark materials.

Did you make your bed this morning? Kelsey-Seybold Dr. Steffanie Campbell said we might not need to.

“If you make it, then you make a nice warm, moist area where things can grow and be happy and so if you leave [sheets] out in the open then you're giving it that oxygen and light to help kill things off,” Dr. Campbell, internal medicine Kelsey-Seybold, said.

Once or twice a week should be the goal to wash sheets.

“Because of all of the things that we put on our body and everything that grows in our pajamas and on our bodies and the lotions and everything that you wear can actually be a breeding ground for bacteria and fungus,” Campbell said.

The spin cycle should be going much more often for your bath towel!

“If you are going by a purist approach then it would be every time you use a bath towel you should wash it,” she said.

Campbell said you can wash your jeans much more seldom, unless they’re tight, skinny jeans.

“If you're just going to wear them out to dinner with your friends or if you wear them to work or out running errands, then after about five times of wear then you should wash them.”
