Houston doctor explains MS symptoms

Jack Osbourne diagnosed with MS after nearly going blind

HOUSTON – Jack Osbourne, 26, has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. A Houston doctor talks about the symptoms of the disease and the benefits of early detection.

The son of rock legend Ozzy Osbourne was diagnosed with the disease just a few weeks after the birth of his first daughter, Pearl, in April.

Jack Osbourne revealed the diagnosis in a new interview with Hello! magazine.

"The timing was so bad," he told the magazine."I'd just had a baby, work was going great. I kept thinking, 'Why now?'"

Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that affects the brain and spinal cord. It was an episode in which Jack Osbourne lost most of the vision in his right eye that led him to seek treatment.

Houston neurologist Dr. Todd Swick, explains "I think we ignore symptoms because we don't want to admit to ourselves that there may be something wrong."

Swick said there are signs that indicate a possible problem.

"Numbness in the hands or feet, loss of coordination, difficulty with balance, weakness on an arm or a leg or both," Swick said.

The diagnosis has Jack Osbourne's parents questioning how this could happen. His mother, Sharon, said she was wondering if it could be attributed to something she did during pregnancy.

"I keep thinking: 'What did I do wrong? What did I eat or drink when I was pregnant? I feel like it's somehow my fault," she said.

Jack Osbourne, however, has adopted an optimistic outlook, with help from his "super supportive" fiancée, Lisa Stelly.

"While I was waiting for the final results, I got really, really angry," he said. "Then I got really sad for about two days, and after that I realized being angry and upset is not going to do anything at this point. If anything it's only going to make it worse. 'Adapt and overcome' is my new motto.'"
