Could Deodorants Affect Breast Cancer Risk?

Researchers Say Compounds Mimic Estrogen, Cause Overload

POSTED: Wednesday, March 1, 2006

Researchers are investigating whether chemicals used in products like deodorant could increase a woman's risk for breast cancer.

Previous research has shown that chemicals mimicking the body's natural hormone estrogen could influence breast cancer risk.

A new report suggests some of those chemicals come from aluminum salts used in antiperspirants.

Researchers said chemicals found in some detergents, cosmetics and tobacco could have a similar effect.

They said the compounds that mimic estrogen can cause an overload of estrogen in the body. Because everyone has different susceptibility levels, it's difficult to know how much is dangerous.
