Supplements Help Some Feel Better

Processed Food Loses Vitamins

If you could take a pill to make you feel younger and healthier, would you try it? Some Houstonians now swear by the power of supplements, KPRC Local 2 reported Tuesday.

"I wasn't able to sleep. My hair was thinning out, partly from stress," Terri Jagger said.

"I am headed for trouble down the road," Rachel Connor said.

Two women with two different concerns got one solution from Dr. Steven Hotze, with the Hotze Health and Wellness Center.

He believes vitamins and minerals hold the answers to better health.

"Vitamins and minerals are needed by your body and make you feel more energy," he said. "Because of the poor American diet and the fast food diet, we need to supplement with vitamins, minerals and nutrients."

Connor worries about her health because of her genes.

"There is heart disease in my family. There is cancer in my family, diabetes in my family. There is high blood pressure," she said.

So, two years ago, after wandering through the vitamin aisles solo, she went to Hotze's Wellness Center for help.

"It is a part of a lifestyle that includes supplements, working out, eating as well as I possibly can," Connor said. "I take melatonin for better sleep and a vitamin C to beat off osteoporosis."

She said she does not believe it's a magic bullet, but simply part of finding balance in her health.

Jagger, 42, is Mrs. Texas 2005. With a husband, six kids and two businesses, she was stressed. It took its toll.

"I was so desperate. I just can't live this life like this and continue to degenerate," Jagger said.

One year ago, she began using supplements and said it changed her world.

"The reason we need vitamins is the food we eat is highly processed, highly packaged. The vitamins and minerals are removed in large part. We get our food before it is completely ripe. That is when vitamins and minerals enter the food -- right before ripening process," Hotze said.

A word of warning -- supplements are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration.

Some contain herbs and other fillers, making them tough for the body to absorb.
