Teen Dies After Choking Himself To Get Rush

Teen Used Rope In Game To Pass Out

UPDATED: 7:32 am CDT August 30, 2005

Police say a 16-year-old from northeast Ohio has died from tying a noose around his neck and dropping to his knees to produce a euphoric sensation.

Jeffrey Patton died at Akron Children's Hospital Sunday, five days after hanging himself on a rope swing at a friend's house in nearby Clinton.

A 911 call was made Tuesday by a frantic teen from a home in Clinton. The boy told the operator that his friend, Jeffrey Patton, was unconscious after choking himself with a rope.

Patton had been doing something he had done in the past: playing a game in which the object was to pass out.

New Franklin Police Detective Mike Korach said two teenagers indicated Patton had done this before. Korach said the teens were unaware of what Patton was doing until it was too late.

The Northwest High School student used a rope from a tree fort to choke himself.

"To do this alone is, I think, a difficult thing, so he tried something, was not thought through, and he got himself into something he could not get out of without help," said Jeff's father, Dennis Patton.

Dennis and Tricia Patton want teens to know that life is precious and some risks may cost them their lives.

"The biggest problem is that kids don't think it's going to happen to them and they don't grasp the consequences and they're invincible at that age," said Tricia Patton.

The Pattons said their son was very friendly and easygoing.

They said their faith, family and friends will help them through this ordeal.

It's at least the third death nationally in recent months involving what's called the "choking game" in which teens cut off oxygen to the brain to produce a high. The Summit County Medical Examiner is investigating Patton's death as accidental and plans an autopsy Tuesday.

In July, a 10-year-old Idaho boy was found dead, hanging from a tree, apparently killed while trying to get high by playing the "pass-out game," authorities said. Dalton Eby may have been the second Idaho child killed in recent months while playing a choking game, trying to cut off the oxygen supply to the brain to achieve a type of "high."
