The latest weight-loss plan has people looking to the heavens for help. It's a Christian-based meal plan that asks, "What would Jesus eat?"
For some, the answer has helped them lose hundreds of pounds while following the Bible diet.
Ron Springer manages a Phoenix, Ariz. Christian store and said the latest diet books are big sellers.
"I have seen customers coming in here just for those books," he said.
All of them are trying to answer one simple question.
"What would Jesus eat? What did people in Jesus' time eat? Two-thousand years ago, we didn't have the trans-fatty acids that are so talked-about now," Springer said.
It's the basis of two full bookshelves, which are devotionals for the dieting challenged.
Carol Bujnowski bought "The Maker's Diet," in a leap of faith for her taste buds.
"The great foods you have to give up and changing your complete thinking on what you can eat," Bujnowski said.
All the diet plans are rooted in scripture and recipes are restricted to biblical cuisine, like whole grains, fruit and fish.
Other items, such as Bible Bars, help dieters stay on track. They are made of limited ingredients, like oats, honey and figs -- foods that are specifically mentioned in the Bible.
But Springer admitted that some products are more style than substance.
"I question, 'Are we making money of something just to make money?' And I think those could be included in that, honestly," Springer said.
For Bujnowski, it was worth a try.
"It ought to be interesting. If nothing else, it will be good reading," she said.
Nutritionists say the Bible diet can be beneficial because it focuses on healthier eating and a reduction in calories. But, as always, it's a good idea to consult your physician before starting any new diet.
