Laser Removes Spider Veins

Summertime in Houston often means keeping cool with a pair of shorts or a swim in a pool. But some women don't bare their legs because of unsightly spider veins. A Houston-area doctor told News2Housotn that he could make them vanish in minutes. Spider Veins Removed With Laser

Dr. Gurney Pearsall uses a Yag laser to burn the small veins away.

"It makes the blood boil, heat up, coagulate and the vessel wall disintegrates. It essentially cauterizes noninvasively," Pearsall said.

Spider veins can show up on women and men for a variety of reasons but heredity and pregnancy are the main causes.

"I know it's hereditary and it does run in my family," said Elsa Rocha, a patient.

Rocha has hated her spider veins for years, so the mother of three went to Pearsall to get them zapped away.

"Every day I see them, I just want them gone. I just decided I don't want to see them anymore," Rocha said. "I've had three children. They were all big babies, so that also makes the situation worse."

Rocha is also a nurse and on her feet for long periods of time, which can aggravate the situation.

Pearsall erased the veins on her legs with pulses of light. He said that he could not do it as well with traditional saline injections.

"With small spider veins, it's very hard to get the small needle to go inside that vessel and coagulate it," Pearsall said.

The procedure only lasts a few minutes.

As for the pain, Rocha said it was worth it.

"It's going to be nice to wear something and not be self-conscious of it," she said.

The cost of the laser procedure begins around $250.
