MIAMI -- A gorilla at Miami Metrozoo
underwent some risky surgery on Friday, reported WPLG-TV in Miami.
Josephine, a 42-year-old gorilla, had surgery on both eyes to remove cataracts and implant new lenses, according to the Metrozoo.
Zoo representatives said the procedure has been done many times on people but fewer than a dozen times on gorillas.
Josephine's cataracts made her nearly blind.
The procedure was risky because of the gorilla's age and because she had to be anesthetized.
Surgeons said a gorilla's eyes are very similar to a human's, so they believe she will recover quickly.
According to the zoo, if the surgery went well, Josephine should be back in the exhibit within two or three days.
There was no word on the gorilla's condition Friday afternoon.
