HOUSTON -- A state lawmaker from Houston wants to make all Texas restaurants trans fat-free, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.
State Rep. Carol Alvarado said she wants to keep Texans healthy.
"If we have a situation where restaurants can no longer use those products, then people can afford to eat healthy," she said. "The bottom line is to make sure that we do everything as a state to reduce health care costs."
The owner of 100% Taquito said he made the change in his restaurant more than a year ago when he replaced vegetable shortening with trans fat-free oil.
"Once you get the government mandating things, you have to remember there was a time that a lot of people were being told to switch over from butter to margarine," Marco Garcia said. "Now they're being told that margarine's bad and they have to switch back over to butter."
Studies show consuming trans fat increases bad cholesterol and the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
House Bill 1523 would ban trans fat. It would mean that all prepared and served foods would have to contain less than 0.5 grams of trans fat per serving.
