Hormone Levels Change After Gastric Bypass

Obese men who get gastric bypass surgery can expect a better sex life afterward, according to a new study.Researchers from the University of Utah said in a news release that the surgery can reverse hormonal changes that lower sexual quality of life."Previous studies have found that obesity is correlated to lower sperm count and can be associated with infertility, but we wanted to know if obesity was biologically associated with an unsatisfying sex life, and if so, could it be reversible," said Dr. Ahmad Hammoud. "Our results show that the answer to both questions may be yes."Researchers followed 64 obese men for two years, checking their BMIs and hormone levels and asking about their sex lives.They found that the more obese men got, the lower their testosterone levels and ratings for their sex lives."Subjects who lost weight through bariatric surgery experienced a reduction in estradiol levels, an increase in testosterone levels and an increase in ratings of sexual quality of life," Hammoud said.The study was accepted for publication in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.
