HOUSTON -- Campbell's Soup and Progresso Soups launched full-blown ad campaigns about their claims of eliminating MSG from many of their soups, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.
Monosodium glutemate is a flavor enhancer found in some processed foods.
Right now, TV commercials and large newspaper ads from each company are touting their soups to be MSG-free.
A spokesman for Campbell's said Wednesday that research shows that women ages 35 and over prefer their family's soups have no MSG. But during this battle for market share, Campbell's advertised over 90 soups with no MSG, including Chicken and Stars.
Progresso ran an ad a few pages over stating Campbell's Chicken and Stars was among those with MSG.
Local 2 checked the label, and it showed Progresso appeared to be right. The Campbell's Chicken and Stars label listed MSG.
Campbell's spokesman Anthony Franzell told Local 2, "We removed MSG from all our kids soups, including Chicken and Stars, but that may not be manifested yet on all store shelves. Shortly, it will be."
Texas Children's Hospital pediatrician Dr. Sara Rizvi said disclosure of MSG is required by the FDA for good reason.
"While MSG is generally safe, those who experience headaches, palpitations, or itching skin should avoid using MSG," she said.
