Woman Orders Medical Supplies, Gets Hazard

Patient Worries About AIDS, Grandchildren

POSTED: Monday, July 28, 2008

An Alabama woman got a surprise in a package that she thought was medical supplies to treat a heart condition, television station WAFF reported.

Inside the bag was a plastic bag with a biohazard warning.

"I pulled the bag up and I said, 'Oh my goodness! what is this?" Bonnie Sambolich said.

She said she worried that the vials inside might contain AIDS or another disease that could infect her 15 grandchildren.

WAFF said that the company that sent the supplies sent people to Sambolich's home to apologize.

An official at a local health department said it appeared that what was sent were unused blood-collection vials, which contain various preservatives. She said the state Health Department would be asked to make a determination.
