Feeling Fat May Be Worse Than Obesity

Teens Happier When Weight Feels 'Just Right'

POSTED: Monday, June 23, 2008

Teenagers who think they are fat say they have a lower quality of life than those who actually are obese, according to a new study.

A study of almost 7,000 boys and girls from age 11 to 17 in Germany found that about three-quarters were normal weight, but 55 percent of the girls and 36 percent of the boys thought they were too fat.

Researchers found that quality of life was lower in those who were actually classified as obese. However, those who also think they are far too fat also suffer.

The researchers said in a news release that it was particularly true for girls.

Also, teens who said their weight was just right had a higher quality of life compared to others of the same BMI, regardless of their actual weight.

The proportion of adolescents who think they are overweight has been increasing more rapidly in recent years than the proportion of those who really are overweight, the researchers said.
