Breech Births May Be In Genes
Bottom-First Births More Common If Parents Were, Too
POSTED: Friday, March 28, 2008
If you were born bottom first -- known as being a breech baby -- your child is twice as likely as the general population to be born that way, too.
Researchers said in a report in BMJ that the data make it likely that genetics is a factor.
A news release on the study said that fewer than one in 20 babies are delivered bottom first. It makes babies more likely to die or suffer from health problems.
Researchers from the University of Bergen in Norway looked at more than 387,000 births, all of which were the first for the parents.
The risk was equally strong for male and female parents.
However, parents who were premature and delivered backward did not pass the risk on to their children. The researchers said this was because the early labor led to the breech birth.
