Cystic fibrosis sufferers may soon have a new drug.

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Vertex Pharmaceuticals announced on Thursday that an oral drug is in development that targets the basic defect in cystic fibrosis.

Patients who took the drug VX 770 for 14 days showed significant improvements in several key indicators, including lung function and sweat-chloride levels. The findings suggest that the drug improves the function of the faulty CFTR protein.

Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease that affects nearly 70,000 people worldwide.
