The Cypress Creek Hike and Bike Trails are being created for all to enjoy in north Harris County, KPRC Local 2 reported Friday.

"Ninety-five percent of it is all in wooded area," said Bud Gessel, director of Timberline Utility District. "There's a lake along the way and on the north side of Cypress Creek."

The Timberline Utility District developed the trails, which are comprised of 5.2 miles of natural surface paths that meander through wooded areas with Loblolly pine and cypress trees, along with many other varieties of native plant species.

Those who are working on the project said their goal is to reserve a wooded area near Spring.

"Part of the Cypress Greenway Project is to preserve the wooded greenway from Cypress Creek all the way from Lake Houston to Katy Prairie," said Gessel.

"We're creating a path for people to go through the woods and enjoy this beautiful natural area," trail builder Susan Stormer said. She has been a trail rider since the 1990s.

She has been one of several people who have been cutting down trees, chipping wood and making the trail's corridor.

"Plants that are really an overabundance in the forest and recycling the materials," trail builder Ryan Spates said.

Project leaders said volunteers are needed on Saturday to help spread crushed granite on the surface.  It will provide better weatherability.

"Once we get done doing corridor work, then we'll get all the roots with a bulldozer," Spates said. "After that, we'll start laying down some base.  Volunteers will lay down crushed granite to have soft surface for everyone to walk on."

Volunteers are still needed to help spread the granite on the trails.  Anyone interested was asked to go to the Precinct 4 Greenhouse  at 3600 Hirschfield Road from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.  The group will provide volunteers with wheel barrows and necessary equipment to make the trails ready for the public.
