HOUSTON -- Imagine being immersed in a bathtub, rubbed with oils and massaged with crushed grapes. It's not an exotic fantasy, but a new type of spa treatment called vino-therapy, also known as wine therapy, KPRC Local 2 reported Thursday.
The Touch Salon and Spa, 835 Frostwood, believes the therapy helps customers relax and possibly find the fountain of youth.
"Grapes have great antioxidant properties. They date back to the 1900s, mid 1900s, back in France when they began providing this service," said Jeanette Jordan with Touch Salon and Spa.
The spa utilizes the healing properties of grapes in a holistic treatment called vino-therapy.
It's been around for years in Europe, but is just now hitting the states.
Services range from manicures and pedicures to full body treatments.
"The treatment starts with a session in the infrared sauna which helps you open up your pores," Jordan said. " We continue with a full body scrub, and then we move them into the tub and that's where they immerse in wine and water. It's two-parts water and one-part wine. The wine is not a drinkable wine."
Proponents of vino-therapy said the grape seeds help exfoliate the skin to improve circulation.
Some French studies even say the antioxidants in the grapes slow the aging process.
Customers who have experienced it at Jordan's salon give rave reviews.
"This really softens the skin and makes the skin feel tighter and makes me feel a little younger, which I appreciate at this stage," customer Bev Edelman said.
"It's very relaxing. It's a real soothing experience," Ken Edelman said.
Vino-therapy spa treatments range in price from $75 to a few hundred dollars.
The products used are manufactured locally by a plastic surgeon.
