HOUSTON -- Parents were reminded Tuesday of ways to keep their children safe during the summer, KPRC Local 2 reported.
The Houston Fire Department , Child Protective Services, Adult Protective Services, and the Texas Children's Hospital Center for Childhood Injury Prevention talked about some of the most common emergencies they see.
"Most accidents can be prevented," said Assistant Chief Adrian Trevino of the Houston Fire Department. "On hot humid days you want to drink water and the sports drinks. Stay away from the sugary and caffeinated energy drinks."
Children's Protective Services officials said the recent death of a child left in the car over the weekend was a good reminder for parents to make it a habit to check the car before they leave.
"Children's bodies warm up 3 to 4 times faster than an adults," spokeswoman Estella Olguin said.
Officials also encouraged people to check on the elderly and make sure they are cool and hydrated enough on hot summer days.
