HOUSTON -- Children face many dangers during the summer, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Houston police and firefighters teamed up with Child Protective Services Tuesday to remind parents of hazards that their children face.
Officials said the best thing parents can do is talk to their children about potential dangers and stress fire and water safety.
"The No. 1 type of abuse-related report we see are home-alone children," CPS spokeswoman Estella Olguin said. "Sometimes it's just that parents might have inappropriate expectations for their children. They might think it's OK to perhaps leave a 10- or 12-year-old in charge of younger siblings, and that might just be too much responsibility for that child."
Police said parents should talk to their children about stranger danger.
"We take it for granted that children know what strangers are," Officer Alvin Steelman said. "Discuss what is a stranger. Strangers are not only people that you don't know, but it could be someone that you don't know very well."
Officials also recommended that parents to talk to their children about how to be safe while surfing the Internet. Police said it is best for computers used by children to be an area where parents can see who their children are communicating with and monitor the sites they visit.
