Endangered Pig Born At Houston Zoo

HOUSTON -- The Houston Zoo became a proud "parent" last week when a rare and endangered pig was born, KPRC Local 2 reported Thursday.The birth of the babirusa pig on May 21 was a first for the zoo.The new arrival was named Hadiah, which means "gift" in an Indonesian language.Hadiah weighed about 1 pound at birth.She is already accepting visitors and can be seen daily on exhibit at the zoo's Wortham World of Primates area, where her mother, Remley, is also housed.Babirusas are small, hairless pigs native to the small tropical Indonesian island of Sulawesi.For more about the Houston Zoo, located at 1513 North MacGregor, visit www.houstonzoo.org.
