Magnets, Lead Pull 9M Toys From Shelves

Polly Pocket, Barbie, Batman Toys In Recall

UPDATED: 6:55 pm CDT August 14, 2007

Threats from powerful magnets and lead paint led Mattel to recall more than 9 million toys on Tuesday, just weeks after it recalled 1 million other products.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said that magnets can come loose and be swallowed in more than 7 million Polly Pocket toys, 680,000 Barbie and Tanner sets, 1 million Doggie Daycare sets and 350,000 Batman figures.

The surface paint on 250,000 Sarge cars from the movie "Cars" were also added to the recall.

The CPSC said that no injuries had been reported on the toys, and that they were recalled in large numbers to prevent any from occurring.

Swallowed magnets can cause intestinal blockages and high levels of lead can hinder development.

Mattel ordered an immediate halt to sale of the toys and that they be pulled from shelves. The CPSC said the company would make production changes to prevent future problems. It also offered free replacements of affected toys.

The company has a list of the toys and their lot numbers on its Web site. It also has a tool that can help you determine if you have recalled toys in your home.

Mattel is the world's largest toy maker, and the affected toys were made in China.

On Aug. 1, Mattel's Fisher-Price division recalled 1.5 million preschool toys featuring characters such as Dora the Explorer, Big Bird and Elmo.

According to three people close to the matter, the latest recall involves a different Chinese supplier.

A new Mattel recall marks the latest in a string of recalls that have rocked the toy industry just as it prepares for the critical holiday season.

With more than 80 percent of toys sold worldwide made in China, toy sellers are nervous that shoppers will shy away from their products.
