Sherman Hemsley, George Jefferson on TV's "The Jeffersons," has died at the age of 74, according to ABC News and TMZ.com.

The actor died at his home in El Paso, Texas, police told People magazine.

Hemsley first played George Jefferson on "All In The Family." He also played Deacon Ernest Frye on the show "Amen."

Hemsley was born in South Philadelphia and dropped out of high school to join the Air Force, People reported. He also worked for the U.S. Postal Service before moving to New York and acting on Broadway.
