Brando Becomes Action Figure For First Time

Icon Will Appear As Superman's Dad, Jor-El, In Plastic

POSTED: Wednesday, July 12, 2006

The legendary "Godfather" of feature films is about to become an offer toy buyers can't refuse.

Mattel Toys has announced that Marlon Brando is becoming an action figure for the first time: His character from "Superman Returns" -- Superman's Kryptonian father, Jor-El -- has been molded into plastic.

Brando died in 2004 at age 80. His appearance in "Superman Returns" was culled from archive footage from the 1978 classic "Superman: The Movie," which starred Christopher Reeve.

Brando's Jor-El figure and "Superman Returns" star Brandon Routh's Kal-El will be packaged in a special "House of El" 2-pack that will be sold at Toys R' Us stores beginning in October.

For those who can't stand the wait, Mattel is releasing a single Jor-El Hologram figure, again with Brando's likeness, at Toys R' Us beginning in August.

Directed by Bryan Singer, "Superman Returns" follows the plight of Superman (Routh) as he returns to Earth after a mysterious five-year absence -- only to discover that the world -- and the love of his life, Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth), has moved on without him.

Brando's action figure will not only be joining Routh's on the shelves. There are also action figures available of Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor, and a Barbie doll of Bosworth as Lois Lane.

Since its release June 28, "Superman Returns" has pulled in nearly $147 million at the North American box office.
