HOUSTON -- A local group that holds an annual festival at the
Miller Outdoor Theatre wants to know if the lack of funding for its event this year is an act of discrimination, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Since 1985, the
Houston Asian American Festival has been held at the Miller Outdoor Theatre near downtown Houston.
However, the theatre's artistic director, Paul Beutel, said board members want events and performances at the city-owned venue to go in a different direction.
"We feel that (our decision) is best serving the public and various diverse audiences in Houston. (The Festival) just isn't professional-caliber entertainment," Beutel told KPRC Local 2.
Festival participants told KPRC Local 2 that performers showcase dances, music and other activities that are native to their home.
"These are people who do these dances in their hometown, in their country. They've learned the essences of the dances," Houston Asian American Association member Carolyn Paraguya said.
Beutel said that if the group can revamp its show, the group could reapply for funding.
