Vote Now: Who Should Get Married On Daybreak?

Polls Close Monday At 6 P.M.

POSTED: Thursday, April 29, 2004
UPDATED: 6:06 pm CDT May 3, 2004

We've narrowed it down to three couples and now it's time for you to decide who should get married live on Channel 2.

Approximately 150 couples applied online for the chance to tie the knot in our beautiful Weather Garden on May 26 during "News2Houston Daybreak."

Read each couple's story below and then vote for your favorite (right). Voting ends Monday at 6 p.m. Viewers are automatically entered to win a free weekend getaway in downtown Houston when they cast their vote (only one vote per person per day is allowed).

Meet the finalists.

Kathryn Denise Hammond and Kristofer Michael Blackman

To Kathryn "Katie" Hammond, Kristofer Blackman was her high school crush.

Blackman, 28, was a senior and Hammond, 24, was a freshman at Tomball High School. It wasn't until Hammond was a senior when they went on their first date. It was a fortuitous date. Katie met Kris' parents and Kris met Katie's.

But they went their separate ways.

Katie was in college when she was called back to Houston to help take care of her dying father. After he passed away, Katie bumped into Kris at an event, and they have been together ever since.

Their first date, years before, was an important one since it gave Kris an opportunity to meet Katie's dad and win his approval.

Katie is currently finishing her degree in public relations while working for Clinique as a makeup artist.

Kris works as a quality engineer.

For Katie, their wedding comes with mixed blessings. She said that aside from the financial help a wedding like this would provide, she hopes it will make it easier to get through the big day without her father to walk her down the aisle.

Tiambe Monique Kuykendall and John Mark Williams

John Williams said Tiambe Kuykendall was taken with him when their eyes met over dominoes. She doesn't remember it that way. While they don't agree on just when they fell for each other, they do agree that they were meant to be.

An education major, Tiambe, 26, works at Sylvan Learning Center as a director. She said it is truly rewarding helping children who may have fallen through the cracks.

John, 30, will finish getting his accounting degree in August. It will be his second degree, since he earned his first in finance. He is planning on taking the certified public accountant exam in November.

The reasons they want to get married on Channel 2 are two-fold.

John comes from a huge family, and with limited resources, they could never accommodate so many people. This way, Tiambe reasons, the whole family could watch, along with Houston.

Tiambe's mother is the second reason. She is in Atlanta waiting for a kidney transplant, which should happen this summer. With a visit planned at the end of May, it would be perfect timing.

Jessica Yvette Salinas and James Horace Powell II

For Jessica Salinas and James Powell, this is all very simple.

They said there is just no other place they would rather be than with each other.

Jessica, 29, said it wasn't easy, but she was determined to wait for the right man to come along.

They met more than a year ago through a friend they affectionately call the matchmaker.

The friend apparently does a good job because Jessica and James have just grown closer and closer with time.

James, 33, works as a mechanic for UPS.

Jessica left flying the friendly skies as a flight attendant to get a degree in fashion marketing at Sam Houston State University.

She splits her week traveling back and forth to Huntsville.

They both said they were looking for a unique way to tie the knot, and this certainly fits the bill.
