HOUSTON -- And you call this work?!? In early September, I was sent to New York City to spend a day at The Dr. Oz Show, which begins airing on Sept. 14 at 3 p.m. weekdays on KPRC Local 2.
What a terrific assignment! One of my favorite cities to visit and a chance to get up close with "America's Doctor."
And let me tell you, the Land of Oz is, in fact, something to behold.
His studios are located at the famous "30 Rock" (30 Rockefeller Center) on the 6th floor.
When you talk to Dr. Oz's staff, you definitely get the feeling that he lives and breathes exactly what you see on TV. Healthy living is A-1 here.
The first shocker was the green room -- no junk food to be seen. And absolutely NO sodas or refined flour.
However, with a room full of reporters, there was visible shock when folks realized there would be no Diet Coke all day long.
This was a full day's work. We taped individual stand-ups and teases for our newscasts, then we got to sit in on a show taping, which lasts about an hour and a half.
After that, we lined up for individual interviews on the set.
The set is just beautiful. It has a very "green" vibe, with wheatgrass throughout, lots of blues and greens with natural wood -- a very clean, refreshing, but not sterile, feel.
Best of all, they have mastered that beautiful "Oprah Lighting" that makes everyone look like a million bucks!
What I really liked was that the audience is so close to Dr. Oz.
We literally were just feet from him seated in the audience, which is great because he really interacts with you throughout the show.
You can tell he has huge fans ,and let's face it, he's not exactly hard to look at.
The ladies in the audience were just giddy. At one point to end a segment on exercise, he dropped to the ground and did push-ups with one leg in the air! And we're talking a lot of push-ups here with not so much as a bead of sweat.
I won't spoil the topics that we covered that day because I'm not sure when that show will air. But, I can tell you there were a lot of oohs and ahs!
Each segment covers different health issues, diet and exercise. There are guests and audience questions, which are hilarious. The idea is nothing is off-limits here.
After the show taping, we waited as Dr. Oz changed out of his scrubs and into a shirt and slacks.
He is extremely personable, and surprisingly, has some ties in Houston.
His wife's family stayed here for a few years in the late 60s, early 70s because they were in the Cooley-DeBakey heart transplant program.
He also spent some time here training with some of our best heart surgeons in the Texas Medical Center.
You can really tell he has a great passion for medicine and really wants to make this show about YOU.
As he said, "We're about you. It's a show about you for you and we're going to make it with you."
In all, we were given 12 minutes with Dr. Oz and I used up every second!
Then it was straight to JFK to get the story back home --- a whirlwind trip, but it was worth it!
I can't wait to see his new show!
Check it out when Dr. Oz airs at 3 p.m. on weekdays on KPRC Local 2, right before Local 2 News at 4.
