Aretha Franklin is not just the "Queen of Soul" -- she's the best singer of all, according to Rolling Stone.

The magazine has put Franklin at the top of its list of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.

Franklin edges out Ray Charles, Elvis Presley and Sam Cooke, in that order.

Coming in at No. 5 is John Lennon, followed by Marvin Gaye, Bob Dylan, Otis Redding, Stevie Wonder.

The "Godfather of Soul" James Brown rounds out the top 10.

Each entry on the top 10 list is accompanied by essays from music industry notables. Mary J. Blige wrote the essay for Aretha Franklin, while Billy Joel pays tribute to Charles.

Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant wrote the essay on Presley, while Van Morrison penned the tribute to Cooke. Jackson Browne wrote the piece on Lennon.

The list was chosen by a group of musicians, music writers and industry insiders.

Paul McCartney came it at No. 11 on the list. Rounding out the top 20 were Little Richard, Roy Orbison, Al Green, Plant, Mick Jagger, Tina Turner, Freddie Mercury, Bob Marley and Smokey Robinson.

Notable singers who didn't make the cut include Joel, Browne, George Harrison, Christine McVie, Linda Ronstadt, Celine Dion, Peter Cetera, Dennis DeYoung, Madonna and Paul Simon.
