'Dark Knight' Passes $400M At Box Office

Film Reaches Milestone In Record Time

POSTED: Tuesday, August 5, 2008
UPDATED: 8:50 am CDT August 6, 2008

The "Batman Begins" sequel "The Dark Knight" passed the $400 million mark at the box office Monday -- and set another record in the process.

According to the film's studio, Warner Bros., "The Dark Knight" had taken in $400.03 million domestically in just 18 days, which took the previous record-holder "Shrek 2" 43 days to do.

The film, in which Batman (Christian Bale) takes on the psychotic criminal The Joker (Heath Ledger), has shattered several box office records since its release July 18.

And it shouldn't be long before it sets another. When it passes the $403.7 million haul of the original "Spider-Man" this week, "The Dark Knight" will become the top-grossing comic-book adaptation ever.

Also when it passes "Spider-Man," "The Dark Knight" will become No. 7 on the all-time box office list.

The No. 1 box office record-holder is the 1996 epic "Titanic," which pulled in more than $600 million domestically.
