Showbiz Divorces: Which Were Nastiest?

Brinkley's Battle Latest In String Of Hollywood Heartbreaks

POSTED: Friday, July 11, 2008

The recent divorce of Christie Brinkley and Peter Cook is the latest entry in a long list of costly showbiz divorces. Brinkley ended up retaining custody of their two children this week, but had to pay Cook over $2 million.

Despite its nastiness, the Brinkley-Cook divorce is considerably temperate when compared to the slew of celebrity break-ups that have turned up on the New York Post's Page Six -- as well as Forbes Magazine. A $2 million settlement is chump-change to the high-profile divorcees below.

Paul McCartney vs. Heather Mills

Activist Heather Mills wasn't about to let former Beatle Paul McCartney's fortune be after nearly six years of marriage, resulting in a highly publicized divorce battle which came to an end in the London courts earlier this year.

Of the legendary musician's personal and business assets came to about $800 million. Mills was awarded a lump sum of $33 million plus the assets she held at the time, which amounted to $15.6 million. McCartney was also ordered to "periodical payments" of $70,000 per annum, for the couple's 4-year-old daughter, Beatrice, and the child's nanny and school fees.

Neil Diamond vs. Marcia Murphy

After 25 years of marriage, it was no longer "A Matter Of Love" for singer/songwriter Neil Diamond and his wife Marcia Murphy. By 1995, the divorce became final. Murphy received a settlement to the tune of $150 million.

Steven Spielberg vs. Amy Irving

After four years of marriage, Steven Spielberg learned one of life's lessons the hard way: never agree to a prenuptial agreement without an attorney present. As it is rumored, the "E.T." director signed away $100 million by entering into a prenuptial agreement that was drafted on, of all things, a cocktail napkin.

Harrison Ford vs. Melissa Mathison

Actor Harrison Ford's split up with screenwriter Melissa Mathison also set celebrity settlement records when their 18-year marriage was terminated in 2004. Mathison received a settlement of $85 million, as well as stakes in Ford's future film sales.

Kevin Costner vs. Cindy Silva

As college sweethearts, Kevin Costner and Cindy Silva were inseparable. After 16 years of marriage, however, the couple sought a divorce. By 1994, the split was official. Silva walked away with approximately $80 million of the actor's cash.

James Cameron vs. Linda Hamilton

Film director James Cameron had three ex-wives under his belt by the time he married Linda Hamilton, an actor he'd directed twice before in the "Terminator" series. Unfortunately, after 18 months of marriage, it was Hamilton who was calling the shots; she made off with $50 million after the divorce was made final.

Other celebrity divorcees worth mentioning include actor Michael Douglas, who paid $45 million to his ex-wife, Diandra Douglas -- almost a third of his entire fortune, according to Forbes; Mick Jagger, who grossed more than $550 million on the last Rolling Stones tour and paid $50 million to his ex-wife Jerry Hall when the couple split after 21 years together.
