Chinese Don't Want Sharon Stone At Festival

Shanghai Film Festival Pulls Invite On Actress After 'Karma' Comments

They loved Sharon Stone at the Shanghai film festival last year, but this year she's not welcome.

Shanghai International Film Festival spokeswoman Tang Bing said Wednesday that the actress will not be invited back soon.

Stone is feeling more backlash stemming from comments she made about the devastating China earthquake while at the Cannes Film Festival last month.

The "Basic Instinct" star suggested the recent earthquake could have been from bad karma because of China's rule in Tibet. The quake's death toll stands at more than 69,000 people.

"I'm not happy about the way the Chinese are treating the Tibetans because I don't think anyone should be unkind to anyone else," Stone told Cable Entertainment News of Hong Kong during a red carpet interview. "And then this earthquake and all this stuff happened, and then I thought, is that karma? When you're not nice that the bad things happen to you?"

The statement caused an uproar in the Chinese media and prompted a major theater chain owner in the country to ban Stone's movies from being shown in theaters. French fashion house Christian Dior also dropped Stone from its Chinese ads because of her comments.

Stone is still trying to make amends.

"Due to my inappropriate words and acts during the interview, I feel deeply sorry and sad about hurting Chinese people," Stone said in the statement. "I am willing to take part in the relief work of China's earthquake, and wholly devote myself to helping affected Chinese people."

The Shanghai International Film Festival is June 14-22.
