Age Doesn't Stop Ford From Becoming 'Indy'

Indiana Jones Star Prefers To Do Own 'Physical Acting'

POSTED: Monday, May 19, 2008

Harrison Ford is back and bigger than ever as the iconic archaeologist, Indiana Jones, in "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" -- but will he still do his own stunts?

Ford is 65 years old now -- considerably older than the virile 39-year-old who outran a round boulder to kick off the first Indiana Jones adventure, "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

At least in his last film, the thriller "Firewall," Ford was still doing 99 percent of his own "physical acting." (The term "stunts" doesn't apply to his method of doing things.)

"I differentiate between physical acting and stunts," Ford said in an @ The Movies interview. "If you get set on fire or you're jumping off the top of a building, that's a stunt."

The last film in the series, "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, " was released in 1989. And like Ford in real life, Indy has aged 19 years for "The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull."

At least this time around the character isn't blind to the fact that he's aged. In a scene from the new movie -- a cold war-era action adventure where our whip-wielding hero tries to foil an evil plot by the Russians -- Indy makes a crack about how his depth perception is off when he swings backwards from a rafter and crashes his rear end into the windshield of a Soviet jeep.

Maybe Ford's eyes are fading and his bones are older, but the legendary film star said the fact that people are still excited about Indy keeps him young.

"I'm delighted that people are still interested in Indiana Jones and still seem to be anticipating the fourth film," Ford enthused.

Directed by Steve Spielberg and produced by George Lucas, "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" features the return of Ford's "Raiders" co-star Karen Allen.

Opening Thursday, the film also stars Shia LaBeouf, Cate Blanchett, Ray Winstone, Jim Broadbent and John Hurt.
