HOUSTON -- The Justice Department has been called to intervene in the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo's Go Tejano Day controversy, KPRC Local 2 reported Tuesday.
The Houston chapter of the American GI Forum brought it to the attention of federal officials.
Complaints began after artists who were not considered Tejano were scheduled to perform.
Some Hispanic leaders said the rodeo has not done enough to include Hispanics, including providing scholarships.
"Why have only a Tejano day and a black day? If you look at the population, it's large numbers of minorities," said Johnny Mata of the League of United Latin American Citizens.
Despite calls for a boycott, Go Tejano Day broke an attendance record on Sunday, with 71,165 people. The previous Go Tejano Day record of 70,481 was set in 2006.
Rodeo officials said Go Tejano Day is not about one music genre but about celebrating Hispanic culture and heritage.
