HOUSTON -- Despite calls for a boycott, protestors could not keep thousands of people away from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo on Go Tejano Day, KPRC Local 2 reported.
A record 71,165 people paid to get into Reliant Park on Sunday. The previous Go Tejano Day record of 70,481 was set in 2006.
Dozens of protestors lined the streets outside and said Rodeo Houston did not represent and include Hispanics appropriately.
Many were upset that the performances were not by true Tejano artists, but some said they were upset that Hispanics do not play a larger role in the rodeo overall.
"We want more contracts for the Hispanic community and the African-American community," Ben Mendez said. "We want more representation for the African-American community and the Hispanic community on the board and we want more representation on the staff. We want more scholarships for the minority community. There's many more issues than just the music."
Rodeo officials said Go Tejano Day is not about one music genre, but about celebrating Hispanic culture and heritage.
