Toy Fair 2008 Has Heroic Movie Feel

'Indiana Jones' Merchandise To Roll Out Big This Year

POSTED: Wednesday, February 20, 2008

If you're ready for some adventure, then toy retailers have a wild ride set for you with some of their planned movie-themed offerings including "Indiana Jones," "Star Wars," "Iron Man," "The Incredible Hulk" and "The Dark Knight" at the International Toy Fair this week in New York.

Large-scale companies like Hasbro and Mattel, as well as specialty/collector-based companies like NECA, McFarlane and Mezco descended upon the Javitz Center in the Big Apple Sunday through Wednesday, hoping to entice retailers into taking a bite into their new product offerings in 2008. Other companies like Sideshow Collectibles remained in California, choosing instead to reveal their new offerings directly to consumers online.

Without a doubt, the movie toy license that is dominating this year's market is "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," the long-awaited action-adventure film that re-teams Harrison Ford with director Steven Spielberg and writer-producer George Lucas.

Hasbro, which held the license to the three previous "Indiana Jones" films, is rolling out a bolder-sized lineup that features action figures of Indiana and other characters from all four films. The company will be producing 3 3/4-inch sized figures, 12-inch figures, deluxe figures packages that include landscapes, horses and vehicles, and large play sets.

Hasbro is producing role-play items as well, including a whip with sound effects and other Indy-wear, as well as a Mr. Potatohead version of the action hero, appropriately branded under the name, "Taters of the Lost Ark."

For the high-end collectibles market, Sideshow is producing 12-inch figures with multiple accessories, starting with Indiana Jones from "Raiders of the Lost Ark." The company is also producing 1:4 scale "premium format" figures of Jones, as well as other collectibles. The company is also busy rolling out more product from "The Lord of the Rings," including polystone dioramas and a 12-inch figure of Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen) from "The Fellowship of the Ring."

Sideshow will also continue to create 12-inch and premium format figures from the "Star Wars" universe, including characters from the movie saga, as well as "The Clone Wars." Hasbro is in a similar commitment, with action figures, vehicles representing the film and new "Clone Wars" film and television series as well.

Sideshow is also keeping up with its staple license -- Universal Studios Monsters -- by offering a polystone diorama of Frankenstein (as played by Bela Lugosi) vs. the Wolf Man (Lon Chaney Jr.).

Before any "Indiana Jones" rolls into theaters, the Marvel comic-turned-big screen superhero "Iron Man" takes flight with a bevy of movie-related merchandise. Hasbro is producing an action figure first -- actor Robert Downey Jr. -- as Tony Stark wearing his Iron Man "metal," in action figure form. The lineup will also include deluxe 12-inch figures and vehicles, as well as role-play items including an Iron Man helmet.

Hasbro also unveiled the look of the new Hulk with action figures and role-play items tied into "The Incredible Hulk" movie. The figures give fans their first glimpse of the green-skinned superhero, which went under a movie-makeover following the underwhelming big-screen reception of "The Hulk" in 2003.

Mattel is facing the unique challenge of marketing the "Batman Begins" sequel "The Dark Knight" in light of the recent accidental death of Heath Ledger -- who stars as the film's chief villain The Joker opposite Batman/Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale).

Well into production before Ledger's death, the action figure lineup will include The Joker, both for mass market and collectors. While the mass market action figures are less detailed and relatively benign, the deluxe collector versions of Batman and The Joker are far more detailed – and the likeness to Ledger, in particular, is haunting.

Like its previous line for "Batman Begins," Mattel's lineup for "The Dark Knight" will include vehicles and larger-scale figures.

With another "Harry Potter" film in the offing in November, the collector-driven NECA (National Entertainment Collectible Association) will continue to make figures from "The Order of the Phoenix," featuring Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) in different attire, as well as secondary characters like Mad-Eye Moody (Brendan Gleeson) and Bellatrix LaStrange. Not surprisingly, the company did not reveal anything from "The Half-Blood Prince," since the film production is under wraps.

Tapping into cult film market again, NECA is also producing two more 7-inch figures from "Grindhouse" (including Kurt Russell's Stuntman Mike), as well as Regan McNeill (Linda Blair) from "The Exorcist" and Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) from the film of the same name. The company is also bringing characters from the classic romantic fable "The Princess Bride" to the action figure realm, starting with a 7-inch figure of Dread Pirate Roberts (Cary Elwes).

Toy companies are answering the call of fans for television show merchandise as well. Collectible company Mezco is producing 7-inch and 3 ¾-inch action figures based on the hit show "Heroes," including cheerleader Claire, (Hayden Pannetiere), Hiro (Masi Oka) and Peter (Milo Ventimiglia). On the movie side, the company is producing figures of Hellboy (Ron Pearlman) and his counterparts for the release of "Hellboy II: The Golden Army."

More than 1,200 toy manufacturers, distributors and importers from 94 countries were expected to attend the event this year's event.

This year's event keyed in on toy safety, given the rash of recalls in 2007.

"I will not tolerate the industry ... ignoring or not complying with our regulations," said Consumer Product Safety Commission acting chair Nancy Nord in an address at the convention.
